Amazon Expands Same-Day Delivery to Include Fresh Groceries in 1,000 U.S. Cities
August 13, 2025
Amazon is now offering perishable grocery delivery through its Same-Day Delivery service in 1,000 U.S. cities, aiming to compete more directly with Instacart and Walmart+ in the fast-growing quick-commerce market. The company plans to expand coverage to over 2,300 cities by the end of the year.
Customers can now add fresh produce, dairy, meat, seafood, baked goods, and other perishable items to their Same-Day Delivery orders, alongside household essentials, electronics, and other products. Orders are handled through Amazon’s specialized temperature-controlled fulfillment network, undergo a six-point quality check, and are delivered in insulated bags to ensure freshness.
For Prime members, same-day delivery is free for orders over $25; smaller orders incur a $2.99 fee. Non-Prime customers can access the service for $12.99 per order, regardless of size.
Amazon says demand for perishable groceries surged when it first introduced items like milk, bread, and eggs to Same-Day Delivery in select cities, with strawberries, Honeycrisp apples, limes, and avocados now among the top-selling items.
The expansion comes as Amazon continues to face challenges in drawing shoppers to its physical retail stores.
