ChatGPT Mobile App Surpasses $2 Billion in Consumer Spending, Dominating Rivals
August 15, 2025
OpenAI’s ChatGPT mobile app has cemented its lead in the AI chatbot market, generating more than $2 billion in global consumer spending since its launch in May 2023, according to new data from app intelligence provider Appfigures.
The milestone puts ChatGPT far ahead of competitors such as Anthropic’s Claude, Microsoft’s Copilot, and xAI’s Grok. Collectively, those rivals have achieved just a fraction of ChatGPT’s mobile revenue — around 30 times less, the analysis shows.
Explosive Growth in 2025
So far this year, ChatGPT’s app for iOS and Android has pulled in $1.35 billion, a 673% increase year-over-year compared to the $174 million it generated between January and July of 2024. On a monthly basis, the app now averages nearly $193 million in consumer spending, up sharply from $25 million per month last year.
The dominance is striking compared to rivals: Grok, the closest competitor, has made just $25.6 million in 2025 to date, averaging $3.6 million monthly. That equates to about 1.9% of ChatGPT’s haul.
User Spending and Market Reach
Beyond sheer revenue, ChatGPT also leads in spending per download. Globally, its lifetime average stands at $2.91 per install, compared with Claude’s $2.55, Grok’s $0.75, and Copilot’s $0.28. In the U.S., spending per download is far higher, at $10, with the U.S. alone contributing 38% of all lifetime app revenue. Germany is the second-largest market at 5.3%.
By downloads, ChatGPT continues to dominate. The app has now been installed an estimated 690 million times worldwide, compared to Grok’s 39.5 million. Average monthly downloads have also surged — 45 million per month in 2025, up 180% from 16 million during the same period in 2024.
India leads in lifetime installs, accounting for 13.7% of downloads, followed by the U.S. at 10.3%.
Competitors Struggling to Catch Up
Some of ChatGPT’s advantage stems from timing. When xAI launched Grok in November 2023, it initially lacked stand-alone mobile apps, limiting reach. Its dedicated iOS app didn’t arrive until January 2025, with Android availability following in March.
While mobile revenue only tells part of the story — since all major AI providers also monetize via web subscriptions and APIs — the data provides a clear window into consumer adoption. So far, ChatGPT has proven the most successful at converting app store visibility into paying users.
Context for the AI App Race
The figures arrive as competition among AI assistants heats up, with mobile becoming a key battleground. Elon Musk recently criticized Apple’s App Store for allegedly favoring ChatGPT in its rankings, but Appfigures’ data suggests consumer demand is driving its lead.
As OpenAI continues to expand ChatGPT’s functionality on mobile, the company appears poised to maintain its commanding position, while rivals face the challenge of scaling both installs and monetization at a fraction of ChatGPT’s pace.
