Google Confirms Customer Data Breach Linked to ShinyHunters Hackers
August 6, 2025
Google has confirmed that customer information was compromised in a recent data breach involving one of its Salesforce database systems. The breach, attributed to the hacking group known as ShinyHunters (formally designated UNC6040), affected contact information and notes related to small and medium-sized businesses.
According to a blog post from Google’s Threat Intelligence Group, the stolen data was “confined to basic and largely publicly available business information,” including business names and contact details. However, the exact number of affected customers remains undisclosed, and the company has not clarified whether it has received any ransom demands.
ShinyHunters is a well-known cybercriminal group notorious for targeting major corporations and exploiting cloud-based databases. The group reportedly used voice phishing tactics to trick employees into granting access to Salesforce systems, continuing a trend of similar attacks affecting other large companies such as Cisco, Qantas, and Pandora.
Google warned that the hackers may be preparing a data leak site—commonly used by ransomware groups to pressure victims into paying for the suppression of stolen data. ShinyHunters is believed to have ties to other criminal collectives, including The Com, a group known for aggressive cyber extortion campaigns.
The incident adds to growing concerns about the security of cloud-based platforms and highlights the importance of employee vigilance against social engineering tactics.
