ElevenLabs Enters AI Music Generation With Commercial-Use Model and Licensing Deals
August 5, 2025
AI audio company ElevenLabs has unveiled a new model that enables users to generate music cleared for commercial use, marking a significant expansion beyond its core focus on voice synthesis and speech tools.

Known for its advanced text-to-speech technology and translation tools, ElevenLabs is now venturing into music generation—a space increasingly under scrutiny over how AI models are trained and the rights involved in replicating artistic work.

To support the launch, ElevenLabs shared samples of its AI-generated music, including tracks with synthetic vocals. One example features a rap performance with lyrics that echo the tone and style of iconic artists like Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre. The release has raised questions about the ethics of generating music that mimics the experiences and cultural backgrounds of real artists.

Concerns about training data have already prompted legal challenges in the AI music sector. In 2024, companies like Suno and Udio were sued by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for allegedly using copyrighted material to train their generative models.

To avoid similar pitfalls, ElevenLabs has announced licensing partnerships with Merlin Network and Kobalt Music Group, two major platforms that represent a wide range of independent and high-profile artists. According to Kobalt, artists must explicitly opt in to have their music licensed for AI training. The agreement reportedly includes revenue sharing, usage safeguards, and favorable terms for rights holders.

Merlin’s catalog includes artists such as Adele, Nirvana, and Mitski, while Kobalt represents acts like Bon Iver and Childish Gambino. These partnerships suggest a strategic move by ElevenLabs to align its AI-generated music offering with industry standards and copyright compliance.

The company’s expansion into music reflects a growing push among generative AI developers to diversify capabilities while navigating the complex intersection of creativity, ownership, and legality in the digital age.
