OpenAI Offers ChatGPT to U.S. Agencies for $1 in Federal AI Push
August 6, 2025
OpenAI has struck a major deal with the U.S. government, offering ChatGPT Enterprise to federal agencies for just $1 per agency for the next year. The agreement, made through the General Services Administration (GSA), positions OpenAI ahead of rivals like Anthropic and Google in bringing AI tools into government operations.
The offer comes a day after all three companies were added to a list of approved AI vendors for civilian federal agencies. These tools will now be accessible through the GSA’s Multiple Award Schedule, streamlining the procurement process.
In addition to ChatGPT Enterprise access, OpenAI is providing unlimited use of advanced models for 60 days, government-specific training, and a dedicated user community.
It’s unclear whether other vendors will match OpenAI’s steep discount. GSA officials have encouraged others to follow suit.
Security remains a central concern. The GSA says a “security-first approach” is in place to protect sensitive government data, but details on deployment methods — like private cloud or on-premises solutions — have not been disclosed.
This move aligns with the Trump administration’s AI Action Plan and executive orders that require government AI tools to remain “ideologically neutral.” OpenAI has not yet commented on how it will address those requirements.
