SoftBank Buys Former Foxconn Ohio Factory for AI Server Project
August 8, 2025
The mystery buyer of Foxconn’s former General Motors factory in Lordstown, Ohio, is reportedly SoftBank, according to Bloomberg. The Japanese conglomerate is said to be planning to use the site to build AI servers as part of the Stargate data center initiative, a project it is leading in partnership with OpenAI and Oracle.

Just days earlier, Foxconn announced it had sold the plant — along with electric vehicle manufacturing equipment inside — to an entity named “Crescent Dune LLC,” formed in Delaware in late July. Both companies have declined to comment on the reported deal.

The sale raises questions for Monarch Tractor, a California startup developing electric and autonomous farm machinery. Monarch was Foxconn’s only remaining contract manufacturing client at the Lordstown site after three other prospective customers went bankrupt. Monarch’s CEO, Praveen Penmetsa, has not responded to requests for comment.

The Stargate project was announced the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration and currently centers on a large data center under construction in Texas. The partners have indicated plans to expand to other states and countries. However, in May, Bloomberg reported that SoftBank was struggling to secure funding, with progress slowed by trade tensions under the Trump administration.

Foxconn purchased the Lordstown factory in late 2021 from EV startup Lordstown Motors, with plans to make it a major North American hub for electric vehicle manufacturing and research. The deal closed in 2022, but by mid-2023, Lordstown Motors had filed for bankruptcy. Other potential customers, including Fisker Inc. and California startup IndiEV, also folded, leaving Monarch Tractor as the sole occupant — until now.
