Meta Buys AI Voice Startup WaveForms to Boost Superintelligence Labs
August 8, 2025
Meta has acquired WaveForms, an AI voice startup, for an undisclosed amount — marking its second major AI audio acquisition in the past month following the purchase of PlayAI. The deal is part of Meta’s push to expand its newly formed Superintelligence Labs unit.
Founded just eight months ago, WaveForms had already raised $40 million from Andreessen Horowitz in a funding round that valued the company at $160 million pre-money, according to PitchBook.
Two co-founders — former Meta and OpenAI researcher Alexis Conneau and former Google advertising strategist Coralie Lemaitre — have reportedly joined Meta. While at OpenAI, Conneau co-created the neural networks behind GPT-4o’s Advanced Voice Mode. It is not yet clear whether chief technologist Kartikay Khandelwal or the company’s other 14 staff members will also move to Meta.
WaveForms’ website has been taken offline, but its LinkedIn profile describes the startup’s mission as solving the “Speech Turing Test,” designed to determine whether a listener can tell the difference between human and AI-generated speech. The company was also working on “Emotional General Intelligence,” aimed at enhancing AI systems’ ability to understand and manage individual self-awareness.
