Sam Altman Reportedly Launching $850M Brain-Computer Interface Startup, Merge Labs
August 12, 2025
Sam Altman is reportedly co-founding a new brain-to-computer interface startup called Merge Labs and seeking funding for the venture, according to sources cited by the Financial Times. The company could be valued at around $850 million, with potential backing from OpenAI’s ventures team, though talks are said to be in the early stages and terms may change.

Merge Labs is said to be collaborating with Alex Blania, head of Tools for Humanity — the company behind Altman’s eye-scanning digital ID project that verifies a person’s “humanness.”

The startup will enter a competitive space dominated by Neuralink, the brain-implant company founded by Elon Musk in 2016. Neuralink has made significant progress in developing brain-computer interface chips designed to help people with severe paralysis control devices using only their thoughts. The company recently raised $600 million in Series E funding at a $9 billion valuation and is currently in human trials.

Both Neuralink and the potential work of Merge Labs could mark a transformative leap in how humans interact with technology, possibly edging closer to what some call “the singularity” — a moment when AI and human intelligence converge. Altman has previously written about “The Merge,” predicting that humans will one day design their own descendants through the integration of technology and biology.

The rivalry between Altman and Musk has grown increasingly public since Musk left OpenAI in 2018, with recent disputes playing out on social media. If Merge Labs moves forward, it may become Altman’s direct challenge to Musk in shaping the future of human-technology integration.

OpenAI has declined to comment on the reports.
