Uber Bets Big on Robotaxis with Massive Investments in Lucid and Nuro
July 17, 2025
Uber is taking a bold step into the future of transportation. The ride-hailing giant has announced major investments in electric vehicle maker Lucid and autonomous driving startup Nuro as part of its ambitious plan to launch a premium robotaxi service in the U.S. by next year.
The deal includes:
A $300 million investment in Lucid
A commitment to purchase at least 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs over the next six years
A multi-hundred-million-dollar investment in Nuro, reportedly even larger than the Lucid deal
These Lucid Gravity vehicles will be fitted with Nuro’s advanced self-driving system and operated by Uber or its third-party fleet partners.
A New Chapter for Uber
This move signals Uber’s strongest commitment yet to entering the autonomous vehicle (AV) space with a high-end product. The upcoming robotaxi fleet, slated for rollout in a major U.S. city by 2026, will combine Lucid’s premium EV design with Nuro’s Level 4 autonomous driving technology, allowing for hands-free, fully automated operation in designated environments.
Lucid's Gravity SUV was a natural fit for this partnership, thanks to built-in hardware redundancies that support advanced AV systems. According to Nuro, integrating their software into Lucid's platform was "almost a delight."
From Delivery Bots to Full-Sized Robotaxis
Nuro’s involvement marks a significant evolution in its business model. Initially known for its compact, low-speed delivery robots, the company shifted its focus in 2023 toward licensing its autonomous technology to auto manufacturers and mobility providers. The Uber partnership is a major validation of that pivot.
Nuro had previously raised over $2 billion in venture funding but faced financial strain in recent years, including multiple rounds of layoffs. The new licensing deal with Uber not only helps stabilize Nuro’s future — it firmly places the company in the running to become a top-tier AV technology supplier.
A Broader Strategy Taking Shape
Uber’s investments go beyond just one partnership. Over the past two years, the company has signed AV deals with more than 18 companies worldwide, targeting various markets including ride-hailing, delivery, and long-haul trucking.
These include collaborations with:
Waymo, for robotaxi services in Austin and Atlanta
May Mobility and Volkswagen in the U.S.
Chinese AV firms such as WeRide, Momenta, and Baidu
With the Lucid–Nuro agreement, Uber is not just placing another bet — it’s trying to own the premium segment of the autonomous ride-hailing market.
What It Means for the Industry
This triple alliance marks a turning point for autonomous transportation in the U.S. It highlights:
Uber’s shift from marketplace to mobility provider
Lucid’s potential to expand beyond consumer EVs
Nuro’s successful pivot to enterprise licensing
If successful, the partnership could reshape how people perceive both luxury EVs and robotaxis — blending comfort, design, and automation in one service.
And while the first self-driving Lucid SUVs won't hit the streets until late 2026, the development and testing are already underway at Nuro’s proving grounds in Las Vegas.
